[00:00:02] Speaker A: As I said, is Dustin Starr. Before you even say a word, Dustin, I'm gonna say something.
Me and Dustin have some links in history and wrestling history, which is kind of funny. Dustin, you probably do not remember this. You may, but you may not. I was at a higher pro show one time and you were backstage or back around, you were either training or something.
I mean, this is you really young. So you, you were trying to jump.
You had never got on the top rope and you were trying to get people to help you. Now I'm standing around and me, one of the worst wrestlers that ever got in a ring.
But I actually showed you where to put your hands to jump up.
[00:00:52] Speaker B: That is so funny. Yeah, man, I must have been years old, right?
[00:00:58] Speaker A: And also I was at your first match.
[00:01:01] Speaker B: Oh, that's even worse. But yeah, so, man, I started really young, 15 years old. And the minute that I took a bump, first of all in Don Bass's barn, in that hard ring, which is just a slab of concrete with some carpet thrown over the top of it, once I hit that, I thought, oh, no, that there's no way I'm going to be able to do this. And I toughed it out. And eventually we used to set up the ring. Don Bass crew, me, Jet Logan, Simon Reed and Alex Crisis, we would set up the ring. And at that time it was like, okay, now we get to train in a real ring. Let's see what it feels like. I took my first bump on that. I swear I almost quit.
Everybody thinks that it's like a trampoline with all this padding.
[00:01:45] Speaker A: It was so hard.
[00:01:46] Speaker B: So, like coming off the top rope, I was probably 150 pounds. I was a kid at 15 years old, I'm thinking, oh, well, this will be easy. Heck no, it's not easy. You have to figure out where to put your hands. Where do you put. Put your feet, how to do it safely. Oh my gosh, it like threw me for a loop. I almost didn't get out of training, to be honest with you.
[00:02:07] Speaker A: Well, you, if you ever, you know, you, you've had a lot of success. It. And I always put you up there as one of the guys that's in the Memphis area who kind of the after the heart, after Jimmy Hart left there, there is.
The promotion started going down. I could do 600 episodes about what I would do. But you're one of those guys that, that still become, to me, still become a star in the Memphis area doing various things. But you also, even though Memphis wrestling really doesn't exist anymore, you was able to act, still be a star. And people know who Dustin Starr is. So that that's one of those things really, in Memphis wrestling was hard to do when there really wasn't Memphis wrestling TV or anything still there.
[00:02:54] Speaker B: Yeah, man, I appreciate it. And it's just been working hard and getting in the gym and every single opportunity that has come to me, whether it's, you know, working for the local hockey team and seeing for the Memphis Grizzlies, you know, doing some radio, being on the news, on television, all that stuff stemmed from wrestling. And even though there's not a Memphis wrestling per se here, especially on tv, I'm a big advocate for Memphis wrestling. No matter what's going on, anybody talking about it helps Memphis wrestling, it helps our business. And so that's kind of what I've been about. And just, you know, just on the daily grind, man, I'm trying to do what I can.
[00:03:32] Speaker C: Me and, me and Maria have a.
[00:03:33] Speaker B: Real good thing going as the power couple. And we travel around Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, just a little bit everywhere. And people come out to see us, man. So we're very fortunate for that, that's for sure.
[00:03:47] Speaker A: Right. So before we do this, as I told you, we have a, I told everyone we have a couple of guests. So you're going to be the first guest today. I want you to get all your stuff in. Let's put it over your Twitter or as the channel, that Guy on Channel 13 calls it, Twitter tweeter. But I want your tweeter handle and put Maria over. I want you to do all that first and then we're going to go into the topic and I'm, I'm excited to talk to you about, about the King.
[00:04:18] Speaker B: Yeah, it should be good, some good stories. But first, you can catch us every single Saturday on cerrito live on Sports 56, WHBQ in Memphis. Of course, you could subscribe to the podcast on itunes or just go to cerritolive.com we have a only radio show in Memphis that talks wrestling every single Saturday. And we do it from 11am to 12pm Central, just like the old Memphis wrestling time slot. So just last week we had Jerry Jarrett on talking about not only the Memphis wrestling territory when he launched it, but then also, of course, we had to ask him about Chicken Salad from the feature on Something to Wrestle with with Bruce Pitcher. So you'll be able to hear Conrad and Bruce talking about it on their podcast here coming up.

Of course, you can go to Five Star Fancam on YouTube and subscribe there so you can catch all the latest wrestling footage and promos from myself and Maria. Fred Kato does an excellent job coming out to each and every show and capturing everything from the front row. I mean, it's like you're in the match pretty much.
[00:05:33] Speaker A: I know. Shout out to Fred.
Great guy. Shout out to Fred. I know you guys are friends, but Fred is a member of our cool kids group and just a great, super guy. So I know he'll be listening.
[00:05:47] Speaker B: Absolutely. And while we're doing that, shout out to Dreadhead Kev because he's been the guy that's been with Five Star Photography. So if you don't subscribe on YouTube to Five Star Fan Cam, then you can obviously go and check out Dreadhead Kev's pictures. He's got a ton of great ones. We are launching some brand new T shirts for the events coming up in the next couple of weeks and get your five star guy five star girl shirts or you can get a Slap City T shirt, which I think would look great on you, bt.
[00:06:27] Speaker A: Yeah, you know, you're gonna have to take a look at the website, look at all the shirts we've came up with.
You know, everything looks good on BT though. You know that, don't you? So.
[00:06:37] Speaker B: Oh God, here we go. This, this Friday, we're going to be with OW in Ashland, Mississippi at the fair. And then on Saturday of this week, Derek King is wrestling his final match in Dyersburg and he's going to be going against me and my Maria.
That is going to be.
I would say that that's going to be probably an emotional night, but it's going to be a whole lot of fun and we'll see if DK really does hang up the boots.
But then of course you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I'm at ustin star with two Rs. Maria, she's at the Maria Star. And while I'm at it, let me throw an extra plug for my tag team partner on Cerrito Live. We Talk wrestling every week at Cerrito, that C E R R I T O.
But of course, our schedules are there. We are booked all the way through July right now, bt so it's going to be really, really busy.
[00:07:30] Speaker A: Working, working, working. And that's. You know, there's was a discussion on Twitter last week sometime with Michael Elgin. He talks about traveling and how he, you know, he feels like going, going, going. How some guys just sit back and say, I wish I was, I wish I wasn't. And you never. I put you over there. You never, never did that. And we had a conversation before we went on the air, which you. You always say, I've got big things going. I got big things. I have never talked to you. I don't think in the whole time I've known you where you don't say, hey, man, you won't believe what we're doing next week. Or you. You know, even as a. As a rookie or even as a young guy, you were always striving to sell T shirts. I mean, you were ahead of the bucks. You know, the young bucks are the merchandise king now. But I think. I think you and Simon, as the posse were, were, you know, y'. All. Y' all were merch kings back before the buck. So.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: Yeah, the Beale street box. Man, that was fun.
[00:08:27] Speaker A: Yeah.
Okay, let's talk about what we got now. Just for record, if you know how many times around, how many times have you been in the ring with the King?
[00:08:39] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh, over the last 18, 19 years or so.
Oh, man, over 20, 20 or 30, maybe more.
Now, BT, I've got to tell you, it's a perfect day for us to be talking about Jerry the King Lawler, because it is May 9th and May 9th in Memphis will forever not be known as Jerry Lawler Day. Because if you can remember correctly, on May 9, 1988, 29 years ago, I was only five years old. I was there live at the Mid South Coliseum when Jerry Lawler defeated Curt Hennig for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship.
Jackie Fargo was the special referee, and I'll never forget that he actually counted to four when Lawler pinned Curt Hennig. Did you know that the day is Jerry Lawler Day?
[00:09:26] Speaker A: Yes, I was going to say that. I was waiting for you to finish, and I was going to say, and Jackie counted to four. But, yes, he did count, so it's hilarious.
[00:09:34] Speaker B: I had to steal your thunder.
[00:09:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I know it. I just.
[00:09:40] Speaker C: I feel like me and Jerry Lawler.
[00:09:41] Speaker B: Go way back to when was five years Old, right. Because I remember my mom and my uncle took me to that match, and we had pretty good seats, too. But I remember we were trying to get out before the crowd, and I was like, no, I want to see the finish. Even at five years old, I had to see the finish. And I remember that four count. And as soon as that four count hit, I remember seeing Lawler and Fargo celebrating in the ring as we were walking up, up the stairs to head out the door. But that was. That's probably one of my first really solid wrestling memories.
That and also being called out about Bill Dundee. You know, I went to the Coliseum at one point, and it was Lawler versus Dundee on top. I had a Jerry Lawler shirt that hung down to my knees. And I ran into Bill Dundee on the concourse with my family. And Bill looks at me and, you know, of course, now me and Bill have a lot of history in the ring together, but at that time, I'm a kid, and he goes, boy, where the hell did you get that shirt from? And I remember looking at my parents like, oh, my gosh, you got me in trouble. I've got a Lawler shirt on.
But, yeah. May 9, 1988. So we are on the anniversary of Lawler winning the world title today.
[00:10:49] Speaker A: Well, this is perfect then. So tell us, you've been in the ring 20, 30 times with the King.
And. And our guest after you is Gene Jackson, who had a kind of, like, living his dream, kind of things been done a couple of times. So he's excited. Was excited. Had some fun stories, but. Yeah, but.
So I know it's going to be hard. I know you've been thinking about this because you kind of knew what I was going to ask you.
So let's pick.
Pick a couple really good stories about the King. And just for. For the record, how many victories do we hold over the King? Because I know that's hard to get. Win over him.
[00:11:25] Speaker B: It is hard to get, but I've had a couple of victories over the King.
Let me start with the very first time that Jerry Lawler wrote me a check. So the first time I ever wrestled. Sounds good at a promotion for Jerry Lawler. Yeah, it was. It was at a TV taping for Memphis Wrestling. We were at the casino in Tunica.
I think it was actually the first time as well that I ever wrestled superstar Bill Dundee. And so I remember thinking, oh, man, here's my big chance. I get to finally work with. Work with Lawler and Memphis wrestling. Well, Bill Dundee beat me with a sunset flip. And I remember that it didn't go exactly the way we wanted because Bill, he couldn't quite, you know, jump. Jump over me like he wanted to, I guess. And when I got to the locker room, he said, damn, kid could have bent down a little further, he'd be blamed it on me.
[00:12:13] Speaker A: Yeah, sure.
[00:12:14] Speaker B: I remember going in. Yeah, Going into the pay window, and for the first time ever, Jerry Lawler writing me a check. First of all, I was excited that I was getting paid, but, you know, it was a big markout moment for Lawler to write my name on the check. And I even thought about, you know, taking a picture of it or not cashing it and saving it and all that kind of stuff. It was so ridiculous at the time, but it was. It was. It was really big for me. And also got got on Memphis wrestling for one of the first times, but first time wrestling the King. You mentioned the Beale Street Posse earlier, and it was Beale Street Posse vs. Jerry Lawler and Brian Christopher. So that was from Memphis Wrestling. We taped it in Dyersburg, if you remember. Sir Moore.
[00:12:58] Speaker A: Yeah, you got a story?
We have to. We're going to save that one story.
There's a great story, but we'll save that for the next time. Bring you just on for. For the full 30 minutes. But yeah, go ahead.
[00:13:10] Speaker B: There's a bunch of crazy stories, but Mo and Derek were kind of booking it. Lawler, of course, was booking as well, but they were trying to help the Dyersburg show. And then they also needed a place to film Memphis television. So it was kind of like, all right, well, who's your top guys here? And Mo and Derek were pushing the Beale Street Posse. And so I remember sitting in the locker room with Simon and just looking at each other. And at that time, Lonely Road of Faith by Kid Rock was real, like real big on the radio. That was one of the wrestler national anthems. And so we were looking at each.
[00:13:38] Speaker C: Other and was like, this is it, this is it.
[00:13:41] Speaker B: We Lonely Road of Faith right here. And I remember we were just hyping each other up, and Brian Christopher told us those spots so fast. I was like, how the hell are we ever going to remember all that kind of stuff? And we went out there and boom, bam, boom. We tore the house down. And it was just really cool that our first match because me and Simon trained together and we were tag team partners for many years. And then the first big match that we had really was Jerry Lawler and Brian Christopher right there on Memphis television. So that was a really cool one. For us, that was the first time I ever stepped in the ring with the King. We did not win that match, but we did deliver the Beale Street Beatdown.
[00:14:19] Speaker C: That was pretty cool.
[00:14:22] Speaker A: So tell me, we got just a few minutes left. I know we could talk about the King for forever. So give me your.
Like I said, I've been there for a couple of shows and.
And as we know, we all get older. The King. King's not doing as much as he used to do in the ring, but he still works hard.
What.
Just give us the. The. Your favorite time here in the ring. You. You've done it so many times. Give us a fun story about the favorite time with you and Jerry.
[00:14:51] Speaker B: It's always great with Jerry. I mean, whether we agree, disagree, whatever. Inside the ring, outside the ring, never. It never.
King's always a professional. And, you know, especially since Maria's come into the fold, we've had situations where, you know, Maria was about to get spanked by the King and he may have pulled her skirt up to reveal her thong so he could spank that booty.
Fortunately, there's no pictures online of that.
[00:15:19] Speaker C: BT don't worry.
[00:15:20] Speaker B: But then there's also been some great times where a few years back at Brawl, in the fall at Minglewood hall, we headlined and we defeated the King. And I remember at one point holding Jerry Lawler up and Maria taking him to Slap City. That was probably a big highlight for me and for Maria. But, you know, anytime that you're able to defeat the King or even just step in the ring with the King is really good, and it's always a great time. But King is one of the best wrestlers that I've ever stepped in the ring with. And you might think that that's kind of strange, especially anybody listening that's never been in the ring. It's like, wait a minute. I mean, he punches, he kicks, he pile drives. I mean, but it goes way beyond that. The guy can feel the crowd. He knows what the crowd wants, and he's just. He's just a professional. I got a good developmental story, so I was doing a WWE tryout in their developmental territory in Tampa at Florida Championship Wrestling, and there's probably 80 guys stretched out across two different wrestling rings. And we're in the middle of our stretches. So at the beginning of each class especially, this was a tr. This was a tryout camp. So somebody was going to get a job, right? Maybe multiple people were going to get jobs. But we're all stretched now, getting ready. Steve Kern was the head of Developmental. He walks in with his cell phone. He lifts it in the air. He goes, is there a Dustin Star in here?
And so I raised my hand and said, that's me, Mr. Kern. He goes, jerry Lawler's on the phone for you. And everybody turned their head and looked at me like, who the heck is this guy?
And so immediately I'm like, what?
Like, how does he even know I'm here? Climb out of the ring. I get on the phone, he's like, hey, what are you doing, man?
Well, about 80 guys are watching me talk on the phone with you. I'm at a WWE tryout. And he goes, oh, yeah, how's it going?
We're just stretching right now. What's going on, King? Can I get some tickets for hockey tonight?
[00:17:12] Speaker A: I'm like, what?
[00:17:14] Speaker B: Because I was emceeing for the local hockey team, and. And he knew that, and I've given him some tickets before and stuff, and so he called me out of the tryout to ask for tickets. I had no idea if I could get them or not, but I said, how many you need, King? Sure, I got you.
[00:17:27] Speaker C: And I hung up the phone, climbed.
[00:17:28] Speaker B: Back in the ring, and I swear, I don't know if I ever recovered from that, because it was.
[00:17:32] Speaker C: It was just very, very strange.
[00:17:34] Speaker B: But that's a pretty, you know, unique Jerry Lawler story in the middle of my WWE tryout. So just seemed like, all the heck is he. What the heck she calling you for? You know?
[00:17:48] Speaker A: Right. Yeah. I mean, I could. You being in a situation. Hey, one of the first times I ever met the King and I, we talked a little bit about this to me and Gene, he'll talk about. At the end of his conversation, the King took me out to the ring with him.
It was him, Rocky, Johnson and Dundee and had me go.
So, I mean, here I am. I met him, you know, three or four times. We're just bullshitting. And he says, hey, come on, you come out to the ring with us. And that was. I mean, I could have probably died at that moment because I being such a big mark for him my whole life, and that was a cool moment with me. Okay? So I want to thank you for coming on.
I want.
I want everyone to visit Dustin's Twitter there. I know Dustin's going to help us and retweet this episode.
Now. We're going to bring on our. Thank you, Dustin. Thank you. We're going to bring you on a couple weeks and just talk about you.
[00:18:43] Speaker B: Okay, Sounds good. BT Holler, man.
[00:18:46] Speaker A: Thank you. A lot. I want to thank, I think, Dustin again, guys, like I said, go to his Twitter page. He has a very active Twitter page.
And then you guys sit in here, we're going to join him with some other people. But our main topic here today, I'm going to talk about this some other time, but I really think there's way too many podcasts talking about old time wrestling, wrestling, as we put it. But there is somebody in the Memphis area and if you grew up watching Memphis wrestling and no matter how old you are or how, how many times you've been in the ring or what you've been doing in wrestling, as soon as you get around this guy still kind of, still kind of, you get butterflies or not really butterflies, but he is the guy that, that we all grew up wanting to be kind of thing in this area.
And then recently Gene Jackson's joined me and Gene was our guest on an earlier podcast and we've been friends for a long time, but he got the opportunity to, to wrestle Jerry the King Lawler. Now Gene, was that the first time in the ring against him that you was able to do?
[00:19:56] Speaker C: Well, my friend Memphis Monroe once wrestled Jerry Lawler. So I kind of feel like I wrestled him twice.
[00:20:03] Speaker A: I didn't know that. I thought this was your first time.
[00:20:06] Speaker C: No, this was the second time.
[00:20:08] Speaker A: So, so what?
[00:20:12] Speaker B: Go ahead.
[00:20:13] Speaker A: You know, what did you bring first the first time you did it? Did you guys. Because, you know, I've been in the dressing room a couple of times before the. Well, a lot of times when Lawler gets ready to do a match and he doesn't talk about it, he doesn't do a thing, he just goes out there and does it. Did you in the first match get to talk to him or anything?
[00:20:33] Speaker C: Yeah, that's actually kind of an interesting story. It was a six man tag in Tupelo.
It was me, Tony Dabs and Extreme Bret Michaels wrestling. Dundee, Lawler and Neil Taylor, they, they summoned us. We were in that building in Tupelo. You know, it was the old, what's it called, the Salvation army building. You know, you've been there for the.
[00:20:56] Speaker A: IWF tape and so there's a lot.
[00:20:58] Speaker C: Of rooms back there. So Lawler, Dundee and Brian Christopher all had their own room over there and all the other wrestlers were crammed into a couple other rooms. So they summons us just before the match, right at the intermission and they got everybody in the room except Lawler at the moment.
And Dundee says, well, what do you.
[00:21:18] Speaker A: Want to do for a finish?
[00:21:20] Speaker C: And Everybody's just kind of looking at each other and I don't know, I had thought it over and I said, well, I've got a finish, if you want to hear it. Dundee kind of smarts. He's like, yeah, sure, let's hear the finish.
[00:21:32] Speaker B: So.
[00:21:33] Speaker C: So I laid out, by the way.
[00:21:36] Speaker A: Before you go any further, your Australian accent is about as bad as mine, but go ahead there, G. Oh, yeah, it's.
[00:21:42] Speaker C: It's. But you can't, you know, you can't quote Dundee without trying. It's just like, without doing a piss poor, dusty impression. But so. So I lay out this finish, which, long story short, involves Jimmy getting involved and Lawler ending up pinning me. And I thought, well, you know, surely he'll go for that.
And so Dundee goes, okay, well, whatever. And Lawler walks in and Lawler goes, we gotta finish. And Dundee again smirks and like, well, Mr. Monroe here gotta finish.
[00:22:17] Speaker A: Tell the Kingfish.
[00:22:19] Speaker C: And so I go through the whole finish again with Lawler.
Lawler sits there and makes face and.
[00:22:25] Speaker A: Goes, yeah, let's do that.
[00:22:27] Speaker C: And we all break and walk away. And so, you know, when I first said the first time I got to finish, everybody looked at me like I had a third eyeball. And then, of course, when I'm right around, Dundee said, lawler, everybody. Everybody's grinning like, yeah, Lawler's gonna tell him to piss off.
[00:22:40] Speaker B: And.
[00:22:40] Speaker C: And then when Lawler said he would do it, you know, as we were walking away, Dundee goes, hey, you know, I've been working Lawler for years, and, you know, you don't usually do other people's finishes. That's kind of cool. And I'm like, wow. So I was pretty psyched about that.
Well, I guess he forgot, you know, when I called the finish, I'm like, okay, so the hot tag, I come running towards, you go to throw a punch, you block the punch, you.
[00:23:04] Speaker B: You punch me.
[00:23:05] Speaker C: Well, apparently he remembered it as a kick because I come running in full speed, waiting to block a punch, and he puts his foot out, cracks two of my ribs.
Well, actually broke them because they were already cracked from another match, and this actually broke my ribs.
So that was memorable. But anyway, the finish went off good and got a good reaction, and so that was cool. Broken ribs aside, it was a. It was a dream come true. Because, I mean, we all, like you said, if you're from the south, you grow up watching Lawlor. You know, Lawlor's a hero. So that was one of the few things on my bucket list when I got in the wrestling business was wrestle Jerry Lawler. So I could finally cross that one off many, many, many years later.
[00:23:48] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, you're in.
You were in the ring with him recently, and he's. I hate to say this, but I think Jerry may be in some of the worst shape he's ever been in. But. So was he real limited to what he was doing, or did he work as, you know, as the old jury? I mean, what think?
Well, he.
[00:24:08] Speaker C: I had heard. I had heard him talk about this on his podcast.
I've only called an episode or two, but he had injured his shoulder over there in Jackson wrestling the albino Rhino.
Rhino picked him up and spiked him on a body slam. And when he came in the dressing room, he was wearing a tank top, and he kind of slid the strap one side. He goes, hey, look, guys. He said, my shoulder is separated. And he had a knot, like, almost the size of my fist on his shoulder there.
And he said, so, you know, watch that. I'm not gonna be able to, you know, do anything.
It's gonna jar my shoulder around. Which we know, we pretty much knew the deal at this point. You know, you know what you're in for when you sign up for a Lawler match.
[00:24:52] Speaker A: Right.
[00:24:53] Speaker C: Nobody was. Nobody was too surprised by that. But the funny thing was that he had this big, huge knot, and I pointed at it, and I told Neil in front of him, I said, hey, Neil, we're. We're in good shape. I said, well, that big ass not there, he's not gonna be able to even get the strap down tonight, so we're fine.
[00:25:09] Speaker B: And Lawlor laughed it off.
[00:25:12] Speaker C: And so it comes time for the match right after intermission, and our music's playing, and me and Neil Taylor and Jimmy Blaylock's getting ready to head to the ring, and Lawler's just now getting dressed over there in the corner as we're walking out. So I don't, you know, I don't see him in his gear before he walked to the ring. Well, once we get to the ring, we're, you know, we're squaring off there, and he points at his shoulder and he's got the strap on the other side, and he goes, y' all are screwed now.
We both kind of laughed at that.
[00:25:44] Speaker A: Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah.
[00:25:48] Speaker C: But here's a little something that made this match interesting. And it's one of those things that, you know, only with Lawler, you know, Jerry is friends with, like, everybody from the Christmas Story movie, and they come Like Scott Schwartz, who was the kid that tongue stuck to the pole, comes and like, stays with him from time to time. Well, Scott was there visiting, so. So Lawler brought him to Amory with him and he was out signing autographs. Intermission. Well, he comes back and asks me and Neil and Blaylock and Derek, who was Lawless partner, could he get involved in the match. So you know, Jimmy's like, well, sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. So he goes and asks Lawler and Lawler comes back and goes, so I heard y' all told Scott he could be part of the match. And Jimmy's like, yeah, why not?
Lawler goes, all right, damn it, that's up to you. So, and we come up with a, we come up with an opening spot.
And then Lawlor said, well, hey, let's just use him for the finish. So they come up with a spot where, you know, me and Neil and Lawlor and Derek are all in there with a four way. At the finish, Blalock comes in with powder and then little Scotty Schwartz is going to come in and kick the powder in Jimmy's face.
[00:27:04] Speaker B: And.
[00:27:06] Speaker C: Of course, you know, we get rolled up and they go over.
So right before the right two matches before this, Brian Christopher shows up unannounced, unbooked, just crashes the show.
And let me say, let me say.
[00:27:24] Speaker A: That'S just unusual for Brian because Brian is one of these guys that just is by the book and he never does. Let me just shut up. Go ahead.
[00:27:32] Speaker C: Yeah. So anyway, Brian shows up kind of unannounced and asked the promoter was there anything he could do. And of course motors like, well, now the show's half over, I don't really have a spot.
So he comes back and, and he's like, daddy, Daddy, come on, let me come in on the finish. Let me come in on the finish. And so finally, you know, Jerry's like, well, we've already got a finish. We got Scott doing something. Come up with something for me. So he's like, well, all right, well, Scott's doing a thing at the beginning so you can come in and kick the powder in Blalock space and, and for the finish and then you can sell your gimmicks afterwards. And so Brian was happy with that. And so we agreed to that and we went out there, I mean, and that little place in Amory is not very big, but I mean, it was, it was jam packed. And my dad was there, my brother and his wife and two kids were there who hadn't seen me wrestle in 15 years. Probably my buddy Mike from college. So all these people came out to see it and a bunch of Neil's family was there, so it was really cool. Easy as. I mean, easy as could be, you know, just really basic stuff. But the crowd was really into. It's always fun working with Derek, you know, and just. Just easy with all those guys. So it was a lot of fun. And the finish went off without too much of a hitch, although we kind of was standing around there. And Lawler's like, where the hell is Brian? I don't know. And finally he comes in and kicks the powder in Jimmy's face. And. And then, of course, it gave me a Neil. But the. You know, the whole. Well, it took, you know, the whole Lawler family and half the cast of A Christmas Story to beat us. So that was fun to tack on to the end of it, but definitely a unique night mixing all that together.
And I guess Derek's retiring soon, I hear, so.
[00:29:16] Speaker A: Yeah, he is.
[00:29:17] Speaker C: You know, me and Neil tagging all those years.
[00:29:19] Speaker A: It was.
[00:29:20] Speaker C: It was a special night to get to work Lawler and get to work Derek one more time and get to tag with Neil and have Jimmy out there and my family there. It was just. It was a really cool experience all the way around. And if it turns out to be Gene Jackson's last match, you know, what a way to. What a way to end it, right?
[00:29:38] Speaker A: Hell, yeah. I mean, you know, that's.
I've always had, you know, a couple people I wanted to work and do stuff with, and I've pretty much done everything with everyone I wanted to, except Cornett. I never took the tennis racket. I always wanted to. And to do something with him. Never say never. We're both getting too old to do shit, though, so.
So you just never know.
I want to end this portion of the show because, like I said, we're gonna bring someone else on to. To talk about working. Lawlor, I always think it's fun to watch. The dynamics between Brian and Jerry are just hilarious to me. It's like Brian is. You know, I tell Kevin all the time that Kevin's the black sheep. And that's pretty bad to call Kevin the black sheep when you have Brian Lawler, that's son.
But it's just funny. It should be on television. They should do a reality show of Brian Christopher with his dad. That would just be because it's just totally different. And the dynamics. Also the way Lawlor works stuff and has always done it on independence. It's almost like he's always separated from everyone, which is a little different than a lot of. I've seen guys like Jay Lethal hang around. Around all of us backstage. But then I've seen guys like Lawler Dundee. I've seen Dundee hang around all of us and criticize us all.
[00:31:03] Speaker C: It's not always good for Dundee to stay.
[00:31:05] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. How bad we sucked and why we did this and what we did that, you know, But.
But yeah, I mean, it's. It's fun to do that. I haven't actually. I don't know if I've. I actually managed. Went out with Lawler one time as if I was his manager.
Believe it was him, Rocky Johnson and someone else. One night, the fun, weirdest thing I'm getting ready to. Yeah, I know it. I'm getting ready to leave the dressing room. He goes, come on out with us. And I, like, go out with the baby faces for no fucking reason.
And it's. I can't remember the third person, but that night. The weird thing is that night, Paul Heyman got his jaw broke by Jerry Lawler.
[00:31:46] Speaker C: Oh, that famous night. Well, that's.
[00:31:49] Speaker A: That's a famous night. I actually had a pict picture of it at one time, and I don't know if it still exists where Lola punching him. And I knew, no, I had no idea he had broke his jaw until we got backstage and Jerry goes, I broke that son of bitch's jaw. And I was like, oh, hell. And that, you know, I was like, all right.
